“Calf’s work is characterized by a distinctive, absorbing materiality, whose surfaces function as a kind of index or register of presence or effort. They relate to the constant prodding, pressing and stroking of touch-screens, and to a persistent material, mental or physical searching or cultivation. The artists approach of making work under several different names brings additional layers to a practice occupied by notions of authorship, classification, and identity, particularly in there relationship to the pursuit of idealized states of being.”

Agnes Calf received a BA from Glasgow School of Art and an MA from Chelsea College of Art, and currently lives and works between Essex and London. Calf was a prizewinner at the Creekside Open (selected by Ceri Hand) in 2013 and was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2013 presented at ICA, London and Spike Island, Bristol. Recent solo exhibitions include Silence is so accurate, Turf Projects, London. Recent group exhibitions include On The Side, Workplace Gallery, Gateshead; Seminal Bricolage (First Attempt), Like a Little Disaster / Foothold Gallery, Polignano a Mare, Italy; Good things come, Plymouth College of Art Gallery; Into the Sea, Dace Road Space, London; Small bird’s nest with blue eggs inside, MMX Gallery, London; Best in Show, 55 Southwark Street, London; Faux Sho, Assembly House, Leeds; Oriel Davies Open, Oriel Davies Gallery, Newtown; and Points of Contact, no format gallery, London.
